Things to Do in Koh Samui for Families With Kids

Planning a family holiday is a balancing act. Parents want somewhere beautiful and relaxing with good food, maybe a little luxury and nightlife, while kids need adventure, space, and activities to keep them entertained (and, let’s be honest, to keep them from driving you nuts).

Thankfully, Koh Samui delivers both child and parent friendly fun in abundance. So everyone leaves here feeling happy and spoiled.

With calm beaches, awesome jungle adventures, loads of family-friendly restaurants, cool wildlife experiences, and a laid-back island atmosphere, Koh Samui is one of Thailand’s best destinations for families.

Whether you’re travelling with toddlers, teens, or multiple generations, our island offers an amazing mix of luxury, relaxation, and adventure without any of the chaos of the larger tourist hubs.

Thailand is paradise, simply put. It’s also an amazing place to bring kids.

If you’re wondering what to do in Koh Samui with family, here are some of the best experiences that make this tropical island such an ideal destination for kids and parents alike.

While Away the Day at Koh Samui’s Family-Friendly Beaches

One of the biggest reasons families love Koh Samui is the beaches. There are very few spots here with rough surf or crowded shorelines. Many of Koh Samui’s beaches are calm, shallow, and ideal for children.

For families travelling with younger children, beach days in Koh Samui are super easy. There’s no need to over-plan. A bucket and spade, fresh fruit smoothies, and a few hours by the water often become the highlights of the trip.

Choeng Mon Beach is especially popular with families thanks to its gentle, emerald waters and relaxed atmosphere. Kids can safely paddle near the shore while parents unwind under the palms with a coconut and a book.

Silver Beach is another favourite, with soft sand, clear water, and excellent swimming.

Kerem Villas guests also have their own private beach. It’s gorgeous, calm, and in full view of the pool, so you can let the kids roam without having to let go of your fresh papaya smoothie or private beach chair.

If you’re traveling with young kids, the private beach is obviously a huge upside too as you won’t need to lug supplies anywhere or get back for nap time.

Visit an Ethical Elephant Sanctuary

One of the most unforgettable family activities in Koh Samui is visiting an elephant sanctuary. I’ve never met a kid who doesn’t love the opportunity to see and interact with elephants up close, while parents are bound to appreciate the educational side of the adventure.

And anyway, elephants are incredible, no matter what age you are.

The island is home to several sanctuaries focused on rescue and rehabilitation rather than performances or riding, though riding is also possible. Families can walk alongside elephants, help prepare their food, and learn about conservation efforts in Thailand.

It’s the kind of experience that stays with children long after they return home and offers a chance at a meaningful connection to wildlife and local culture.

Go Inland to Explore Waterfalls and Jungle Trails

Koh Samui is much more than beaches. The island’s lush interior is rich with waterfalls, tropical jungle full of exotic plants and incredible flowers, and scenic viewpoints that make for memorable family adventures.

The Na Muang Waterfalls are among the most accessible for families. The short jungle walk in feels adventurous without being too demanding for younger kids, and the waterfalls themselves are a refreshing relief on a hot day.

If you have older children who’d enjoy ATV tours, ziplining, or guided jungle excursions, there are plenty of options. Younger families may prefer gentle walks and nature stops. The island’s size also makes it easy to combine several activities into a relaxed day away from the sun and beach without wasting much time in transit.

Stroll Around Fisherman’s Village Night Market

If you’re looking for what to do in Koh Samui with kids during the evening, Fisherman’s Village is one of the island’s best family-friendly spots.

Located in Bophut, this charming walking street comes alive at night with food stalls, music, shopping, and entertainment. Kids will love the lively atmosphere, sweet treats, and colourful market stalls, while parents can enjoy fresh seafood, cocktails, and local Thai dishes.

Unlike some busier nightlife areas in Thailand, Fisherman’s Village feels relaxed and welcoming for families. It’s an easy place to wander together, stop for dinner, and soak up the island lifestyle.

Sail Away: Take a Boat Trip Around the Islands

Boat tours are another reason families return to Koh Samui year after year. The surrounding islands offer calm snorkelling spots, hidden beaches, and stunning scenery that appeals to all ages.

If you’ve never seen the dramatic coastline of Thailand from the water, you’ll be stunned.

Ang Thong National Marine Park is particularly popular for day trips. Families can kayak through emerald lagoons, snorkel in shallow water, or simply enjoy the ride as your boat weaves through the islands.

Private or small-group tours tend to work especially well for families travelling with kids, allowing for a more flexible pace and a less crowded boat.

For many kids, these boat adventures become the defining memory of their time in Thailand as getting out on the water to feel the breeze and see the landscape is bound to make an impression.

Savour the Relaxed Pace of Island Life

One of the underrated reasons Koh Samui works so well for families is simply the pace of life. The island feels relaxed without being isolated. There are excellent restaurants, modern conveniences, international supermarkets, medical facilities, and plenty of activities, but everything moves at a slower rhythm than larger cities or busier resorts. It’s hard to overstate how much that balance matters when travelling with children.

All of this is especially true when you have a villa as your homebase.

Parents can enjoy beach lunches, sunset dinners, and peaceful mornings while kids have space to play and explore. There’s less rushing, less stress, and more time spent actually enjoying each other’s company.

Why Villas Work Better for Families in Koh Samui

We’re biased, but on this note, there’s no argument.

Where you stay will completely shape your family holiday, and many families immediately discover that private villas offer a much more comfortable experience than traditional hotel rooms or resorts.

Instead of squeezing everyone into one space, villas provide room to spread out, relax, and settle into island life properly. Parents can enjoy evenings together after children are asleep, meals become easier with full kitchens and dining spaces, and private pools and beaches allow for flexible family time without having to navigate the resort crowds.

At Kerem Villas, families find a balance between luxury and practicality that’s nigh on impossible to achieve in a hotel setting. The spacious multi-bedroom villas provide privacy, open living areas, fully equipped kitchens, and private infinity pools, an on-site gym, and private beach, all within a peaceful beachfront setting in Plai Laem.

The location is particularly convenient for families because of the quieter atmosphere while still being close to beaches, restaurants, Fisherman’s Village, and many of the island’s top attractions.

For parents travelling with younger children, having amenities like laundry facilities, separate bedrooms, kitchen access, and private outdoor space can make the entire trip infinitely more relaxing.

I don’t think you need us to convince you of that.

Family Dining Is Easy in Koh Samui

Another reason families love Koh Samui is the food scene. Thai cuisine is naturally family-friendly, with fresh fruit, grilled seafood, rice dishes, smoothies, and simple flavours that appeal to children as well as adults.

You can get adventurous but you don’t have to.

Most restaurants are casual and welcoming to families, and many beachfront spots allow children to play in the sand while parents enjoy dinner nearby.

Let’s be real: some children are adventurous eaters, others prefer (or insist on) simple favourites. For them, international dining options are widely available, making it easy to find familiar meals when needed.

All in all, dining around the island is generally stress-free.

Koh Samui Creates Holidays Your Family Will Remember

Some destinations are packed with attractions but feel exhausting. Others are beautiful but lack enough variety to keep families entertained. Koh Samui sits comfortably in the middle. The island gives families the freedom to slow down without ever feeling bored.

Especially when you have a villa as a home away from home.

Days can be as active or relaxed as you want them to be. One morning might involve snorkelling or jungle adventures, while the next is spent by the pool watching the ocean.

That’s why so many people return here year after year. Koh Samui offers something increasingly rare: a destination where both parents and children genuinely enjoy their holiday together.
